My Dear Friend & POTUS, DJT,
Lake America? Are you sure you want to move forward with this name change thing? AIC could not determine how much it would cost, but we both know that some resources will be devoted to the effort of switching things around in the federal system. Is it worth it? I’m not hearing anyone use the name, “Gulf of America” so it’s doubtful that “Lake of America” will catch on.
Did you make the name change Exec. Order yesterday because you couldn’t bear to say any names that you associate with Canada? I’m afraid that some people feel that way about your name & have invented various work arounds to avoid using it, very similar to the ways that Harry Potter & his friends avoid uttering the name, Valdermort. Maybe you should try that with Lake Ontario, you could call it the lake which Rochester, NY sits on or the Great Lake North of NY, then you could avoid all this renaming hullaballoo.
Names do matter & in an ideal world, we’d call people by the word that they prefer. I wonder what the lake with all the American eels would like to be called. We urge school teachers to use the names that children were given by their parents rather than make one up that’s easier for them to pronounce. We consider it a sign of respect. The lake with the eels was born of a glacier, so we can’t ask it what it would like us to call its offspring.
As I told you when you renamed the gulf, place names are best when they don’t have any political connotation as in Gulf of Dolphins. According to the Canadian government, “Ontario acquired its name from the Iroquois word “kanadario”, which translates into “sparkling water.” That doesn’t have a political connotation to me so perhaps it would be best to just stop this change-the-name campaign.
Better yet, let go of your obsession with names altogether! I’d love to see you give up your penchant for putting your own name on everything, especially your latest effort to get the Navy to call their CVN-81 aircraft carrier the DJT rather than the USS Doris Miller.
Speaking of names, did you know that Artemis was Apollo’s twin sister? That’s why Jim Bridenstine thought that it would be the perfect name for NASA’s moon shot program. He thought it would highlight the involvement of women this time around. I’d love to hear you mention this during the award ceremony for the astronauts today.
My final ask of the day is that you take a look at the report that just came out from the UN about Burma. It says the human rights situation there has “plummeted to a new low.”
