Has the snow in DC gotten ugly yet? I hope not. I always tell Californians that snow piles persist long past their prime as the once downy flakes turn to ice & accrue so much soot, pee & poop that they become a sizable eyesore. I hope temps increase soon so you don’t have to see that kind of thing.
Speaking of ugly, I’m disturbed by the stories coming out the East Montana ICE detention center in El Paso. The homicide of Geraldo Lunas Campos on Jan 3 is particularly disturbing & I hope you will heed Rep Veronica Escobar’s request that it be investigated. That incident raises questions about who might be profiting from the $1.2 billion federal contract Acquisition Logistics LLC received for building & running the place. Should tax dollars go to a company that lacks a functioning website, has minimal public presence, & relies on a residential address for its headquarters? Sounds fishy to me!!!
Other ugly things in the news are making it hard to “walk cheerfully” over the Earth today. The most disturbing item came from the Irrawaddy which reported “Kokang scam bosses executed.” Two aspects of the story are troubling, the most obvious being the killing part, because, as I often remind you, there is that of God in everyone, even those who do terrible things. Moreover, as George Fox told us, “you can’t kill the Devil with a gun or a sword,” so capital punishment will not stop the Kokang clans from feuding with each other & everyone else.
The less obvious troubling aspect relates to the ways in which rebellious folks, looking for freedom from oppression, resort to insidious activities such as scam centers & drug dealing. Throughout history, groups everywhere in the world have succumbed to this dynamic, including the ELN which will, undoubtedly, be a focus of your conversation with Colombia Pres. Gustavo Petro today.
I encourage you to think about how to bring dissidents into the fold. Doing so will require creativity & I have confidence that someone on your team will figure something out.
