It was a sad day here in Davis yesterday. Police officers from all around the country came to honor the life of Rookie, Natalie Corona, who was killed by a mentally ill man last week. She was on duty at the scene of a car accident, and a guy came up on his bike and shot her several times. She was only 22 and the model public servant. The whole town is traumatized by the event in part because the shooter was on the loose for several hours and officers from surrounding towns came to "secure" the city. Unfortunately, they turned the place into a war zone, and kids are now wondering if they're safe. I hope you will call Natalie's family and express your condolences and then follow up by doing something about limiting access to firearms.

On a happier note, did you see the beautiful portraits of all of the women in Congress in the NYT this week? https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/01/14/us/politics/women-of-the-116th-congress.html You should take a look! All of the 130 photos are striking, and several are quite distinctive. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, from the 12th Congressional district of NJ, wears a bright pink dress and flashes her bald head. AZ Sen. Krysten Sinema stares straight at the camera with her funky glasses and playful attire. Rep. Lucy McBath of the 6th District of GA has the brightest smile on the page. How fitting that all of these women are gracing the pages of the NYT during this week when women are making their presence felt in DC for the March for Life, yesterday, and the Women's March, today.

I encourage you to be in touch with Lucy McBath. She can help you understand how devastating gun violence can be. Her 17-year old son, Jordon, was killed at a gas station by a man who didn't like his loud music. She had a surprise victory in her district so she's a winner. Just the kind of person you like best.

I am curious about the announcement you'll be making today. I hope you've got some fresh ideas to end the shutdown.

Best,
