Happy Easter

Have you ever tried to explain Easter to a child? I struggled to do so on Palm Sunday last week. I got stuck on explaining why Jesus was a threat to those in power. His only army were his disciples & their only weapons were words of love. 

My 7-year old Friend looked especially confused when I tried to explain resurrection.  I found myself dancing around the Biblical version of events, being wary of saying something that might trouble him or his parents.

I don’t believe in a literal interpretation of that story so I was hedging, saying that after his death, Jesus lived on in his disciples. 

What’s your interpretation of the resurrection story? Do you believe that Jesus came back to life & his physical body walked around? Your Presidential Message on Easter does not provide enough detail to clarify your belief. Unfortunately, it does give the impression that all Americans are Christian which I found most off-putting. 

I encourage you to be more careful to clarify that our nation was founded on the idea of keeping the church out of politics, articulated by Thomas Jefferson in “Act for Establishing Religious Freedom” & James Madison’s “Memorial and Remonstrance Against Religious Assessments.” I’m sure TJ & JM would cringe to hear you call them “Christian Patriots.”

Given that your message included information about what you pray for & how you “rejoice,” I assume you spent some time in church today. I hope that was uplifting for you & helped you see that WINTA!

Please do everything you can to renew your commitment to bring peace to the world including doing whatever you can to stop the violence in Burma!
