Winter Storm Hernando? Did you know that’s the name the Weather Channel has given to today’s blizzard hitting NYC & Boston? My brother in East Hampton has 3 feet of snow & it’s still coming down. I hope this one doesn’t do too much damage. Luckily, AP claims FEMA has about $7 billion to $8 billion in its Disaster Relief Fund, so we can help out if need be. 

SoW, how are things going on ending the partial shutdown? paychex.com says “the U.S. Senate continues to find no resolution” so you might want to spend some of your Executive Time today talking to our elected officials about this.

Speaking of “Executive Time,” I just noticed that your people are using that term on your public schedule these days. Apparently John Kelly started using that term in your last stint in the Oval Office because you “believe too much structure stifles creativity” & your prefer unstructured time which allows you to improvise. I might adopt that term for days like today when I don’t have anything specific on my calendar which I have been calling “having a flexible schedule” lest people think I have nothing to do.

I suspect you will devote most of your time to planning the SOTU, but you also might reconsider your tariff decision. It might be best to just let Congress decide that one. Most voters think it’s a bad idea so you could just let go of it for now.

Speaking of letting go of misguided plans, the Irrawaddy included a story today about the Myitsone Dam that the junta would like to build near the Mali Kha-N’Mai Kha river confluence. It’s a bad idea in so many ways, but they are pitching it to China anyway. XJ probably has the sense to say, no, but when you see him next month you might remind him he has more electricity than he needs. I wish that were the case for us, but that’s another matter.

Did you get to watch any of the Olympics? It’s exciting to see the USA hockey winning both gold medals & fun to see curling getting so much attention.
