My Dear Friend & POTUS, JRB,

            It’s another hot day here in Davis. It’ll be about 108 at 4:30. Perfect day to use the solar oven to bake a cake. Unfortunately, I don’t have a solar oven & I don’t eat cake. Oh well.

According to the scientists quoted in today’s G, our crazy heatwave is earlier, longer & stronger than ever & is alarming Americans. A prof in Utah says it was so hot in Logan that 3 of 5 computers used for field work overheated & died. The rings on old trees indicate that this drought is not natural. We are “loading the weather dice against us.”

  Time to get busy. Please declare an emergency so you can use your executive powers to redistribute resources to focus on this problem.

            It looks like you had fun signing the Junteenth National Holiday Bill yesterday. I loved seeing you give Opal Lee the pen that you used to sign it. KDH’s comments were spot on, especially her observation that we “must learn from our history.” Vann Newkirk captured the essence of the day when he wrote, “ Juneteenth is the purest distillation of the evils that still plague America, and a celebration of the good people who fought those evils.” He noted that we need to recognize “the highest purpose of jubilee: to deliver a moral accounting.”

            Did you know that according to Scripture, we’re supposed to have a Jubilee every 50 years to release people from debt, release all slaves & return property to those who owned it? I encourage you to consider declaring 2022 the year of the Jubilee to give back some land to our Indigenous folk, provide reparations to the descendants of enslaved people & forgive student loan debt for everyone. We could all rejoice as we turn our full attention to combatting climate change.
