It was heart-warming to see people of different faiths gathered together with you in the State Dining room at the WH last night to recognize National Prayer Day. I found it reassuring to hear you talk about the importance of freedom of religion. I greatly appreciated your comments about the power of prayer but was somewhat baffled by your enumeration of the number of judges that you have appointed and your insinuation that this set of judges was going to solve problems caused by previous judges. The idea of our government is to separate church and state so religious leaders are not supposed to have an influence over who serves in the judiciary. At least that's my understanding of the Constitution.

You noted that the Pledge of Allegiance includes the phrase, "one nation under God." Did you know that was added in 1954? My guess is that Americans wanted to make it clear that we were not communists who eschewed religion completely. Being a person who values independent thinking, I understand why some folks are suspicious of organized religion. I don't want someone telling me what to believe and how to behave. So, I encourage you to worship however you want. I would also ask that you to stop talking about God like you are selling a product. It's disturbing.

I hope you find peace of mind as you participate in the National Day of Prayer this morning. Since you are such a fan of God, I would love to see you attending church more often.

           Best,

           RCA
